Inkjet printed OLED production 70 per cent of LCD cost by 2013

OLED technology is still being developed to reach larger screen sizes, like Samsung’s 55-inch HD LED television, the 8500 SeriesStart-up Kateeva has developed an ink that could be used to manufacture displays up to Gen. 8.5 sizes, claiming it will be cheaper than LCD processes by 2013.

A report by Greentech Media suggests the US company's T Jet technology - which controls the state of materials between layers of a display in an inkjet printing process - could be competitive in four years' time, at 70% the cost of LCD television production.

Kateeva CEO Conor Madigan states: "By 2013, OLEDs will really be established at a volume manufacturing level. They [television manufacturers] see a market where small margins rule and higher costs lose."

The company is due to ship prototype systems to customers for Gen 3.5 substrate production, with larger-area technology to follow.
