Heliatek, a Germany-based organic solar cells materials developer, has created a solar cell in the lab with an efficiency of 6%.
The breakthrough, certified by Fraunhofer ISE, marks a crucial step in Heliatek's development of organic photovoltaic (OPVs) technology. A mid-term future goal is achieving 10% efficiencies with the technology.
Heliatek, a spin-out from Technical University (TU) Dresden's Institute of Applied Photophysics (IAPP) and the University of Ulm, developed the tandem solar cell, along with the IAPP, based on the results of two German government-funded projects; Innoprofile and OPEG.
Heliatek will cooperate with Fraunhofer IPMS to pilot produce the solar cells on equipment within Fraunhofer IPMS's Centre for Organic Materials and Electronic Devices.
