European technology companies and research institutes are joining forces in a new project that aims to integrate lighting into everyday surroundings and products.
Potential applications include on-body concepts for healthcare and wellbeing.
The Platform for Large Area Conformable Electronics by Integration (PLACE-it) consortium project and partners will be officially announced on 15 March 2010.
Partners include Philips Research through its Lumalive incubator venture Lumalive, which is developing photonic textiles for clothing and other applications.
The first commercial Lumalive product is event gear. It is aimed at corporations that want to use outfits featuring LED lighting and displays as a marketing tool, at exhibitions and similar events.
In the long term Philips aims to use photonic textiles to target the healthcare market through applications such as phototherapy.
The PLACE-it project will look at integrating lighting into products and surroundings such as walls, ceilings, floors furniture, soft furnishings and potentially clothing.
