UK-funded project produces ITO-free OLED lighting demonstrator

07 Apr 2010

Work on OLED technologies in CDT’s cleanroom facilitiesUK companies Cambridge Display Technology (CDT) and Conductive Inkjet Technology (CIT) have produced a polymer OLED (POLED) lighting device that does not use a conductive indium tin oxide (ITO) layer.

OLED-Info reports that the demonstrator, produced in a collaboration under the Nomad project, is a step towards replacing the brittle and relatively expensive ITO materials typically used as a conductive layer in OLEDs.

The use of ITO has been considered an issue for OLEDs, particularly for displays and touchscreens, for some time. The material does not lend itself to the cheap and flexible devices being designed in OLED R&D.
