Sumitomo develops cost-efficient 40-inch OLED displays

21 Nov 2011

Japanese company Sumitomo Chemical has developed a technology that could boost the production of large OLED displays for TV usage.

Sumitomo will produce the displays for around 50 percent less than current methods allowThe company uses macro molecule materials as the main OEL component, instead of low-molecular materials. This is expected to lower production costs by up to 50 percent, and will allow for more screens to be built, which could make it possible to mass-produce OLED TVs. Sumitomo expects its annual output of displays using the technology to reach four to five million at 40-inches, reports the website TechCrunch.

Sumitomo is ready to set up a production facility in Osaka before the end of 2011, and will start production of screens in early 2012.
