Apple has filed two patents in the US for transparent OLED displays that could lead to 3D computing.
The patents, filed with the United States Patent & Trademark Office (USPTO) state that devices using the technology would feature two displays, in order to create a believable perception of depth without the need for special glasses. The pixels of the OLED panels would remain transparent when in use. This could be used in mobile hand held devices, or in desktop computers, where processors could also alter the brightness of each display, states a report on 9 to 5 Mac
The documents, which also exalt the possibilities of OLED thinness and ability to work without a backlight, credit Apple engineers Peter H. Mahowald and Benjamin A. Rottler.
