US firm Corning, a supplier of Liquid Crystal Display glass, is planning a move into OLED glass production for large screen displays.
The company has developed a new glass for televisions using OLED technology. At the same time, potential customers are already testing an existing version, according to a report by Star Gazette. Corning believes that its current facilities in Asia, used for producing its LCD display products, will be capable of making the transition to OLED glass, without the need for major investment.
The global demand for LCD glass current stands at 3 billion square feet, while OLED glass is estimated to be at 10 million square feet in 2011. However, LG recently announced its plans to manufacture large screen OLED TVs, indicating a potential increase in demand.
