Higher blue OLED efficiency boost to displays

25 Jun 2011

Scientists have proven that the efficiency of a fluorescent blue OLED can beat the theoretical boundaries.

The brighter blue OLED will help create displays which can last longer while consuming less powerThe researchers from IMRE, part of Singapore's Agency for Science, Technology and Research, and the University of Michigan, have pushed efficiency up to 9.4%, nearly double the theoretical limit. This was done by changing the thickness of the light-emitting layer and concentrating the material within it, states a report on Nanowerk. The achievement allows manufacturers of OLED displays to make devices with longer lifetimes, while consuming less power and emitting a better, brighter blue light.

The design is also solution-processable, making manufacture easier and more cost-effective, which could boost the introduction of OLED technology in the display market.
