Market analyst DisplaySearch has forecast a rapid growth in fabrication of large OLED displays, while at present the cost of manufacture is preventing their growth.
According to the AMOLED Process Roadmap report, the manufacturing cost of a 55-inch white OLED with colour filters is eight times higher than that of a LCD display, while the cost of a panel using red, green and blue filters is ten times higher. The higher costs are mainly the result of low yields and materials costs, reports a DisplaySearch press release. Manufacturers are expected to raise the yield of these large displays, reducing costs in the process.
The report states that in order to scale up to large sizes, advancements in several aspects of AMOLED manufacturing are needed, including the active matrix backplane, organic material deposition, and encapsulation.
