Researchers develop high-efficiency flexible OLED

02 Nov 2011

Researchers at the University of Toronto have used a new production method to produce high-efficiency flexible OLED displays.

The OLED production method keeps costs down, while developing high efficiency flexible panelsThe method involves using a 50-100 nanometre layer of optical thin-film coating material, which is applied to flexible plastic. This recreates the high refractive index of other substrates such as glass, yet remains low-cost. The findings are currently in the laboratory stage; however the team hope the research could bring about the proliferation of flexible OLED screens, in smartphones and tablets, reports TechEye.

In order to reach their goals, the team are seeking to use high-efficiency OLED panels seen in Samsung smartphones. The team believe their method of production is the first that is viable for cost efficient flexible displays.
