Researchers at IBM have built the first integrated circuit based on a graphene transistor.
In what can be seen as a step towards flexible electronics, and a move away from silicon in computer chips, the circuit demonstrates the efficiency of a grapheme transistor in a working environment. Previous transistors have not been useable, but have demonstrated operating speeds twice as fast as their comparable silicon counterparts, according to a report by Spectrum IEEE. The circuit built was integrated into a broadband radio frequency mixer.
Graphene is seen as a flexible and superior solution to silicon, which is expected to reach its limits this decade.
