Samsung updates progress on flexible OLED displays

19 Apr 2012

Technology manufacturer Samsung has updated its plans to launch flexible OLED displays, including the new brand name for the technology.

The YOUM displays are expected to be introduced to the market in Q4 2012, with mass production beginning as early as May 2012. The company has announced a joint venture with Japan's Ube Kosan to develop polyimide resin which will be used as the display's substrate. Tera Semicon is to provide the curing equipment. YOUM will also use thin-film encapsulation, reports OLED Info.

The new panels are expected to be 0.5mm thin and will withstand shock. Due to the higher cost of materials, it is forecast that there will be a premium on flexible OLEDs, over glass based OLED displays.
