Sony has announced that it has abandoned its OLED panel development for the consumer market, concentrating on other display technologies instead.
The company will continue to promote its OLED displays for corporate devices, but will focus its attention on LED and LCD panels. Sony was the first company to venture into the OLED display market, with its XEL-1 11-inch television in 2008. However the high cost of around €1,600, together with low production levels, did not attract significant consumer interest. The company has now decided to take a different path to improve its share of the display market, reports the Digital Trends website.
The news comes as LG launches its new 55-inch OLED display, which has received substantial media interest, at CES in the US.
