TDK begins manufacture of clear OLED displays

01 Jun 2011

TDK has started mass production of a new see-through OLED display for the mobile phone market.

Contents on the display cannot be viewed from behind for privacy reasonsThe display uses a white-emitting material behind a grid of RGB colour filters, rather than separate red, green and blue emitters. This means the life of each colour element is identical, and colour shift is absent, allowing for a longer life display. It has been designed so that, although see-through, the display contents cannot be read from behind for privacy purposes, reports the website Electronics Weekly.

The technology is based on Kodak's small molecule intellectual property, which TDK calls organic electroluminescent. The display, named UEL476, will be available later in 2011.
