South Korean firm Duksan Hi-Metal are challenging patents held by Universal Display on phosphorescent materials in OLED manufacture.
The challenge follows a Japanese ruling that two OLED patents held by UDC on the materials in the country were invalid. A report on the Korea Realtime website states that UDC have announced intention to appeal, and all other patents remain valid in their respective countries.
The materials covered are used to make OLED panels brighter and more efficient, and UDC receives royalties each time they are used, by companies such as Samsung and LG. Duksan is taking action as it is blocked from producing the materials as a result of the patents.
Any ruling in the Korean company's favour would open the OLED market, and could drive down material prices while allowing for better displays.
