UK to invest £50 million in graphene development

04 Oct 2011

The UK Government has announced a £50 million (€58 million) investment in a new centre for the development of graphene technology.

The Chancellor met the inventors of graphene at the University of Manchester, where he outlined the investmentChancellor George Osborne made the announcement while visiting the University of Manchester. He outlined his plans for the creation of a Graphene Global Research and Technology Hub to commercialise graphene, which is currently being used to develop touchscreen electronics and thin transistors. It has also been used recently to make thin-film speakers and flexible electrodes amongst other devices. The centre would help to develop the technology further, allowing manufacture on a large scale which would open up commercial opportunities, states a University of Manchester report.

It is hoped the centre will act as a catalyst for the UK to spawn new technology businesses and attract global manufacturers, including those investigating uses in mobile devices.
