The UK Government has announced a £50 million (€58 million) investment in a new centre for the development of graphene technology.
Chancellor George Osborne made the announcement while visiting the University of Manchester. He outlined his plans for the creation of a Graphene Global Research and Technology Hub to commercialise graphene, which is currently being used to develop touchscreen electronics and thin transistors. It has also been used recently to make thin-film speakers and flexible electrodes amongst other devices. The centre would help to develop the technology further, allowing manufacture on a large scale which would open up commercial opportunities, states a University of Manchester report.
It is hoped the centre will act as a catalyst for the UK to spawn new technology businesses and attract global manufacturers, including those investigating uses in mobile devices.
