A breakthrough in the performance on organic photovoltaic (OPV) cells means they can now be considered for commercial use.
Molecular Solar has developed its cell technology to allow for open-circuit voltages in excess of 4V. The team behind this believe it is a record for an OPV device.
The development means that these cells are now capable of delivering electrical energy at a suitable voltage for recharging lithium ion batteries, reports Science Business. This means flexible cells are now a more attractive proposition for commercial applications.
Molecular Solar is currently finalising a £5 million (€3.6 million) investment round to complete the up-scaling of its OPV technology.
