Developments could push organic solar into commercial market

21 Oct 2011

A breakthrough in the performance on organic photovoltaic (OPV) cells means they can now be considered for commercial use.

The team at Molecular Solar believe the breakthrough could allow OPV to enter the commercial marketMolecular Solar has developed its cell technology to allow for open-circuit voltages in excess of 4V. The team behind this believe it is a record for an OPV device.

The development means that these cells are now capable of delivering electrical energy at a suitable voltage for recharging lithium ion batteries, reports Science Business. This means flexible cells are now a more attractive proposition for commercial applications.

Molecular Solar is currently finalising a £5 million (€3.6 million) investment round to complete the up-scaling of its OPV technology.
