New solar cells printed on standard paper

16 Sep 2011

The Institute for Print and Media Technology at Chemnitz University of Technology has developed photovoltaic panels that can be printed on standard paper.

The solar cells can be printed onto paper, and could allow packaging to carry displays and other electronicsThe technology, known as 3PV (printed paper photovoltaics) uses conventional printing methods, such as those used in magazines or packaging. The cells have a conversion efficiency of 1.3%.

The team has shown that the printed cells can already run small electronic devices, and believes this could enable smart packaging, allowing products to carry small displays and information, reports SolarServer.

The researchers used a new material approach. In a special printing process, naturally oxidised zinc is applied as a base electrode. The transparent counter electrode is printed with PEDOT, a conductive polymer.
