The UK will invest £8.4 million (€10.2 million) in plastic electronics businesses, funding 13 technology development projects.
The investment provided in competitions run by the UK Technology Strategy Board was announced by the minister for universities and science David Willetts.
Plans to use the funding include the Thin Organic Prototypes, Design, Research, Applications with End user Recognition (TOPDRAWER) project. TOPDRAWER is a consortium of OLED lighting developers, which will create an ultra-high efficiency polymer lighting panel and prove manufacture at the UK's Printed Electronics Technology Centre.
Coordinated by Thorn Lighting, TOPDRAWER partners include Cambridge Display Technology and Pilkington Glass.
