Philips and BASF are working together to develop an OLED car roof, which will act as both a window and a light source.
The OLED panel will be transparent when switched off, but will provide light only inside the vehicle when it is turned on. There is also the possibility of adding organic photovoltaic (OPV) solar cells to the panel, allowing drivers and passengers to enjoy daylight as the car gathers energy, and a warm diffuse light in dark conditions, reports technology website Electronics Weekly. BASF and Philips have been working together within the OLED 2015 initiative of Germany's Federal Ministry of Education and Research since 2006.
Vehicle engineering company Webasto and solar firm Konarka are currently working together on OPV solar roofs for cars.
