OLED lighting developer Philips has created the first OLED module that can be plugged into mains electricity.
The innovation means that no power management circuitry is required to operate the lighting devices, according to a company announcement.
OLEDs have typically required low-voltage, DC sources of power, but Philips has created a device that uses AC. This means that fewer components are required in an OLED module, such as a lighting device or display.
Philips has made a number of advances in OLED lighting design, and expanded its range of products for designers and architects earlier in 2010.
