Sara Ver-Bruggen - 22 Nov 2010

ZBD, a UK-based supplier of electronic shelf labels using e-paper technology, is securing interest from retailers in eastern Europe for its technology.

ZBD's e-paper shelf labels are being used by Coop in Hungary. Image: ZBDThe company has been targeting the Hungarian market in the wake of a contract with Magyar Telekom. The leading telecoms firm in Hungary installed the technology in its T-City 'Future Store' project, an initiative for showcasing new innovations. The ZBD displays are being used in a new Coop store in Szolnok, which is part of the T-City programme.

Coop is Hungary's third largest retailer. The Szolnok Coop store, 65 miles east of Budapest, is one of the group's latest new stores.

The bistable, LCD-based e-paper displays supplied by ZBD, based on proprietary technology, are installed within the fruit and vegetable, delicatessen and chilled sections of the store. The labels show customers the latest prices of foods as well as ingredients, country of origin and promotions.

ZBD is working with Hungarian partner, Laurel, to gain access to more retailers in food and non-food markets in Hungary, which has a growing retail industry.

The displays, which provide clear images, scannable barcodes and detail, are a cost-effective alternative to other e-paper electronic shelf labels and systems on the market.

The company has also partnered with a local business in Poland, as part of its wider strategy to commercialise its technology in growing retail markets in eastern Europe.

In 2010 ZBD has secured a string of deals for its labels in Europe, including installing its technology in a new 'future store' opened by the Italian Coop group in Parma, a contract with Coop in Norway and Shell Schiphol in Amsterdam, the Netherlands.

+Plastic Electronics Volume 3, issue 3, will include a series of special features on the markets for printed electronics and paper, including the future of e-paper in various markets.
