Ynvisible secures grant to aid electrochromic displays launch

Sara Ver-Bruggen - 03 Jun 2011

Ynvisible, a Portugal-based company developing low-cost interactive printed displays, has won a grant from the Portuguese National Strategic Reference Framework (QREN) to support efforts to commercialise its technology.

Ynvisible's electrochromic inks will be used in displays for point-of-sale advertisingIn a project valued at over €1 million QREN's incentive of over €550,000 will fund the development of production resources and equipment, strengthen the company's IP portfolio, and support Ynvisible's international marketing efforts.

The grant is part of 'SI Inovação' (Innovation Incentives System), a programme granting financial support to investment projects submitted by companies, based on their degree of innovation, growth potential and international focus.

Technology economy

QREN is aimed at promoting high and sustained levels of economic development, with an emphasis on knowledge, science, technology, and innovation.

Ynvisible, a spin-out of YDreams, makes interactive displays with electrochromic inks aimed at packaging, advertising, print media, signage and smart wearables.

Initial product launches that incorporate Ynvisible's displays will include point-of-sale posters and advertising, with customers in Europe.

Recently the company filed a patent application and registered the trademark Yntouch, following successful development of touch-sensitive functionalities for its electrochromic displays.

Industrial printing

Ynvisible established a partnership with UK-based inkjet technology firm Xennia in March 2011, deploying its expertise to optimise inks for the industrial printing of the electrochromic displays.

Xennia will optimise the chemical formulations of Ynvisible's inks, enabling rapid industrialisation of its displays, and guaranteed quality and efficiency of the inks in large-scale printing processes.

In the US consulting and technology licensing firm Ajjer is developing ultra-low-power electrochromic displays and indicators.

The next issue of +Plastic Electronics magazine is a nanotechnology special, with a series of articles on the latest technologies and emerging markets for printed nanoelectronics. The magazine will be appearing at the forthcoming NanoMaterials 2011 conference.
