Ynvisible targets point-of-sale with electrochromic display technology

Sara Ver-Bruggen - 01 Mar 2011

Point-of-sale advertising will likely be the first commercial application for an interactive electrochromic display being developed by Portuguese start-up Ynvisible.

Ynvisible is commercialising a low-cost interactive display technology based on electrochromic inks. Image: YdreamsProducts featuring the displays will be introduced in trials in sites in western Europe by mid-2011. The company is aiming to scale-up production towards the end of 2011 and early 2012.

The ability to provide novel interactive displays and animations at low cost has appealed to the company's end-use partners, which are looking to use the technology with brochures, invitation cards and store windows, besides point-of-sale advertising.

Production

Ynvisible's commercialisation strategy is to carry out initial production in-house, delivering displays to end customers. The company is also in talks with other production partners that, under a license, will use its proprietary inks and technical expertise to produce Ynvisible displays on their equipment. In the mid-to-long- term the company expects the majority of its revenues to come from such licenses and has been working with potential production partner for several years to prepare the technology for market.

In the future, besides packaging, print media, point-of-sale displays and advertising, Ynvisible intends to develop its technology to be compatible with a wider variety of substrates, such as paper, cork or fabric, opening new applications for the displays such as clothing and furniture.

Partners

Ynvisible's network of partners is comprised of some of Portugal's top laboratories and industrial manufacturers. They include the Photochemistry and Supramolecular Chemistry Group from the Faculty of Science and Technology of Universidade Nova de Lisboa, the Centre for Nanotechnologies and Smart Materials (CENTI), paper company Grupo Portucel Soporcel, and Sonae Indústria, a large producer of wood-based panels.
